We Go Eat! - Poke

We Go Eat! - Zippys

SHORT DESCRIPTION:

After receiving an Emmy award nomination for our Ramen Yokocho documentary, Andrew Tran and the Redefined.Media team saw a greater opportunity for sharing the art and origins of Hawaii’s cuisine with the rest of the globe. Teaming back up with Host Lanai Tabura, we raced back to the drawing board. We were committed to launching We Go Eat!, our very own Hawaii food documentary mini series—proudly written, directed, and produced by the Redefined.Media team. Each 30-minute episode follows the origin stories of Hawaii’s favorite dishes. We tour the islands to showcase the small businesses that continue to leave large impressions on our hearts and stomachs.

In our very first episode of We Go Eat!, we trace back to the origins of poké and visit the tastemakers behind some of Hawaii’s famous poké counters. We sample the classics and best sellers of Foodland, Tanioka’s, and Alicia’s Market while learning how these locally-owned businesses came to be the flavor hubs of our communities. Finally, we meet with Raymond Noh of NOH foods to learn how he’s making poké even more accessible across the globe with ready-to-make freeze-dried poké ingredients.

Our second episode of We Go Eat! highlights Hawaii’s most iconic chain restaurant: Zippy’s. Known for their famous chili and a huge variety of local favorites, Zippy’s has been a local staple across the Hawaiian Islands since 1966. Our team was honored to hear about the restaurant’s humble origins from Charlie Higa, one of the original co-founders, himself. Charlie and his brother, Francis Higa, started with a simple vision that has since grown into a legendary success. Lifelong friends, family members, employees, and customers of the Higa brothers share their cherished memories, sentiments, and favorite dishes from Zippy’s, showing us that Zippy’s is more than just a restaurant. It’s a place we can truly feel at home.
